join domain error

We have just setup a test system running build 5384, but when attempting
to join the machine to the domain we got the following error message:
"you must be a member of the local administrators security group to
join the domain", there is only one user account set with admin
rights.
A work around was to boot into safe mode with network and select the
default admin account logon, then we were able to connect to the domain
with http://computerconnect.
Has to be a better way any pointers ?

I don't know if I can help here but, I installed it, added to the workgroup,
then added it to the domain.....worked with no problems at all.... (had to
the the workgroup/then domain on a few 2000 and XP boxes in the past).

In Windows Vista, all programs run with non-admin permissions, even if
you're logged in as an administrator.

The only programs that get full admin permissions are the ones that
automatically ask for such permission, or you can explicitly run a program
with admin permissions.

As you found out, the only exception to this (by default) is the built-in
Administrator account, which always runs programs with full admin
permissions.

Joining a domain from the system control panel should have automatically
asked to be ran as an administrator. It sounds like maybe you were doing it
some other way?

To explicitly run a program with admin priviliges:

- Right-click the program, shortcut, or start menu item
- Click Run As Administrator

This is especially useful on a command prompt :)

Note that this does not work like the "Run As..." command from Windows XP.
You are not running the program in the context of a different user (unless
the current user is not an administrator), you are just giving that program
administrator powers.

Were you trying to connect to a SBS domain? Was the url
http://servername/connectcomputer ? Many people including me have had
problems joining Vista to a SBS domain via the SBS connectcomputer wizard.
Maybe you found a workaround.

Well yes as stated I used the recommended way as per SBS2003
[http://servername/connectcomputer], we found a work around , but there
must be a better way of connecting a machine to a domain surely ?.

It is the SBS connectcomputer wizard that is the problem. It seems to be UAC
in Vista that is causing it. There are sporadic reports of it working for
some people and not others. Vista can join a AD domain via the System
Properties no problem. The SBS wizard does a lot of things unique to SBS.
The general consensus is that by the time Vista is released the SBS wizard
will work. In the meantime your workaround seems to work.

LOL, I was planning on using your safe mode trick next time I install. I
find with SBS it's always best to use the SBS wizards.
