Error 1904

Guest

Have installed, uninstalled, reinstalled many times. Keep getting the same
error. Reads as follows:

Error 1904.Module C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Antispyware\gcAntispywareLibrary.dll failed to register. HRESULT -2147220473.

The error pops with different dll's about 4 or 5 times.

Any ideas on how to fix?

I was getting the "Unexpected error; quitting" error at login of any User
Login, and all had Admin privileges, so (following the advice of the product)
uninstalled, and got the uninstall errors for uninstalling the 5 DLL's;
gcAntiSpywareLibrary.dll, pcASPrivacyLib.dll, gcASSoapLib.dll,
gcTCPObjLib.dll and gcSoftwareUpdateLib.dll

Reinstalled and got the Error 1904 messages 5 times trying to register the 5
DLL's each one getting the HRESULT -2147220473 annotation within the error
message.

After trying to run the Microsoft AntiSpyware after the troubled install, I
got the Critical error (Error 101) message which suggests the uninstall of
the program.

In attempts to integrate with "OneCare" and more likely provide a method to
remove the Sony XCP root-kit intrusion software, have we broken the
previously reliable application?

It's seems clear that a recent update (that happened overnight
automatically) has "broken" it ... can't unistall it, can't install it ...
where do we stand ?

That really is weird, ive got the same problem too. I just installed the
update, and when i open the software it tells me those errors also. Did u
guys click "restart now"? because i didnt since i had unsaved work, but i
restarted like 10 minutes after.

During the initial update, I did restart the computer. But after each
successive install, that requirement did not come up. I found that kind of
strange.

Obviously this problem is affecting multiple users. I just hope we get some
direction from Microsoft on Monday.

I'm having the exact same problem, with registering/unregistering the .dll's.
CAN ANYONE HELP?

Little Extra information for anyone who wants to try to figure this out...

First off i am having the same problem..
However, I can install antispyware on one user and it works great. If it is
installed on different user including newly created users it gives that error.

All users are admins and all users are adware free.

That may or may not be a clue to my problem. When I tried to update MSAS, I
was logged in as a different user and got the referenced errors.

But I did uninstall and reinstall (many times) as the user that originally
installed the program, to no avail.

Thats my exact situation

I avoid most of the "numbered" error threads these days because I don't feel
like I have a simple answer.

I don't think that this is an issue that is new with the new build--but the
reinstallation process seems to be creating that appearance.

The requirement for a reboot relates to the need to remove the shell execute
hook, as I understand it. The current installer cannot do that without the
restart. A new install doesn't require a restart.

It's been my general feeling about this product that most issues can be
fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling, perhaps with an additional step of
deleting the .gcd files (or, sometimes, JUST deleting the gcd files)--but
this issue seems to be beyond that and get to the multi-user issues, which I
expect must relate to the user registry hive, and perhaps permissions in
other registry hives. This is an area I'm pretty weak in--another hesitancy
to speak up.

I didn't note whether the machines in this thread were XP Home, or Pro?
Either can have multiple users.

I'm tempted to recommend using a good registry cleaner which is capable of
examining all the user hives for Microsoft Antispyware related entries and
removing them--but this is really blind advice. I've never looked at what
this program does in the registry--it hasn't been needed for the main run of
issues that people have here.

That kind of advice and the Windows Installer Cleanup tool, perhaps--are
what I think of in terms of returning the machine to a state as though the
beta had never been installed, and being able to start over.

I don't have very many machines with multiple users--perhaps a handful that
have two regular users, typically both administrators, and some other cases
where somebody uses a vacant office and signs in using their credentials
creating a new profile. I haven't seen these errors. Every once in a while
I'll see an error 101 on a server where I also come in by Remote Desktop--and
it is usually spurious--the app is up and running for both users.

Many of the numbered errors, and this is one, are generic errors from the
Windows Installer. There are KB articles, and perhaps newsgroup threads,
relating to these errors in other products:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/237294/

for example.

This article may have some grains of wisdom that will help make sense of
this issue, as may others referencing the same error.

I can recall doing this for some other numbered error in the early days of
the beta, but I don't recall the outcome, or that I learned much about the
products workings from that effort. Because these are installer errors,
there will be third-party hits as well as Microsoft hits--a lot to sift
through.

I'll try to stick with this thread if you think it will help--I'd love to
have a test case for this myself--maybe I can try to create one with a
Virtual PC running Windows 2000 that I have.

On a user which gives errors:

can you promote them to administrator, and do a control panel, add or remove
programs, Microsoft Antispyware, change, update?

Then demote them again?

they are already admins

Do you get this 1904 error if you try the update process?

I know that some messages relating to the "101" error describe a situation
in which a registry key is set with permissions for the current user only,
rather than all users, or the administrators group. This sounds like it
could involve that same kind of issue. I haven't seen it first hand, though,
even on machines both at home and at work sites with multiple users.

yes i do

All right--let me see if I understand the broad situation:

The beta1 product is installed on a machine which has multiple users--in
some cases at least, these are all administrators--has anyone answered the
question about what version of Windows this is? XP? Home? Pro?

The product may run for one user, but does not for others. It isn't
repairable, nor is it uninstallable?

What happens if you uninstall, signed in as the user for whom it works?

Bill, first off I am running XP. Secondly, I believe the problem lies when
switching between users. Here is why.

Logged on as User 1 - Installed MSAS in October. Flawless operation.
Logged on as User 2 - Update request comes through. Attempt to update when
logged on as User 2 and get the referenced errors.
Logged on as User 1 - Install, uninstall, reinstall, all to no avail.
Receive the referenced errors every time.
Logged on as User 2 - Downloaded and installed MSAS. SUCCESS. Program worked.
Logged on as User 1 - MSAS error, quitting. Uninstalled.
Logged on as User 2 - Installed again. SUCCESS again.

I am not computer profecient enough to understand why the error is occurring.

I have XP Pro, and have been using MSAS since it was released with the same
one(admin) of my six users. Like everyone on this thread, I just recently
started having this problem. Last night I uninstalled, deleted the
directories, rebooted, then went through the registry and deleted all
occurances of AntiSpyWare I could - there were a few entries that would not
open, then I rebooted again. With fingers crossed I tried a fresh install,
but same problems. I uninstalled with errors and rebooted. Tonight I logged
in as a completely different user with admin rights, and successfully install
MSAS! Makes no sense, but I went ahead and set up the nightly scan schedule
and I'm through troubleshooting.

G

I tried that too. But when I logged in as another user, MSAS froze the
computer. So it is not as easy a solution as you may thing.

G

Guest

OK, I tried everything. Windows Installer, Registry Cleaner, Deleting GCD
files. Nothing worked. But I am convinced the problems lies with MSAS
programs left on the computer. Just not sure how to find them to delete them.

Bill,

For my issues described earlier, I have a fully licenced XP Pro SP2, that
has all known patches and fixes applied.
