Error 1609

While installing Defender, I get past setup type (full) -part but installer
stops while at "creating folders" -status and shows error 1609: "An error
occurred while applying security settings. Users is not a valid user or
group. This could be a problem with the package, or a problem connecting to a
domain controller on the network. Check your network connection and click
Retry, or C..."
I am running Windows XP sp2. Installing the program on other user accounts
yields the same results and internet connection is working normally.
What could be the cause?

Hi!
I have the same problem as Sca. I´m using a Finnish version of XP. I was
until today using MS Antispyware, which I had no problem installing or using.
When I learned about this new version I uninstalled the MS Antispyware and
tried to install Defender...but with the same result as Sca. I don´t
understand how to use the "walkaround" described. Is it because I´m not a
user of the XP PRO version that I´m stuck or? Can someone please describe to
me how to solve this or will I have to wait for an update in the beta version
of this nice program? Thank´s!

Hi!
I´m running XP home edition, a Finnish version, and seem to have the same
problem as Sca. I read the instructions for the walkaround, but I´m still
stuck. Is this because I´m running the home edition? Can someone please
explain to me how to solve this or is the case that I have to wait for an
update in the beta? I was until today running MS Antispyware which I was able
to install and use with no problems. I also uninstalled MS Antispyware before
trying to install Defender. Thank´s!

Hi

There is no workaround for Home edition, searched for
registry hacks with no luck, just to wait.

I believe the german users will find a workaround soon ;)

Or Mr Ballmer in Barcelona on a Spanish version..... ;)
Ooops ! Error 1609 if he shows his spannish friends.

regards

Steps to install Windows Defender

1.- Create an account called Users ((Start---->>Control Panel---->>Account
Users---->>New Account))
2.- Set as Limited Account User. Don't set any password
3.- Click on Create Account.
4.- Run the installation program of Windows Defender

That's all. I have the same problem and do this, and works. My SO is XP Home
Edition. Best regards from Mexico!!

No crear ningun password.
3.- Click en Crear cuenta
4.- Inicia el programa de instalacion de Windows Defender

Thank you for this information. Works great.

Small question.... Can I remove this account after installing ?

Thanks. Sander (Netherlands)

If I try to install Defender on a Dutch XP Home system under a limited rights
account called "users", I get an error stating that I need administrative
rights to install Defender. What am I doing wrong?
