I keep getting this error every time I try to install or
uninstall any applications. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

There's an app or piece of hardware whose install or uninstall has not
completed - it's running with no UI. You'll need to think back to exactly
when this problem started - it's what you were installing just before the
problem started.

"A user receives an error message such as "Another installation is already
in progress."

Cause: An uninstallation might be taking place in the background, with no
user interface presented to the user, or perhaps the user has inadvertently
triggered two installations simultaneously, which is not supported.

Solution: The user can try again later"

to be more helpful, specifically the reference to this key:
Check the following registry key:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress
and clean any entries that you find.

Alternately, if the install was Office 2000, this might help:

Well, so far nothing I've tried seems to work.
If you can think of anything else, I'd appreciate it.
