Error 1406 - Major Problem

Lynn Q

Hi there,

I originally posted this to the office.setup newsgroup, with no reply yet.
In addition to the information below I tried running the Office Update. It
downloads, but the installation fails, perhaps due to the 1406 error below.

Using Windows XP Pro SP2 and trying to install Upgrade version of Office Pro
2003. Get Error 1406 relating to registry permissions. The upgrade was
from Office Pro SR1 2000 (note: all Windows XP updates applied, and Office
2000 had all updates applied also).

Checked KB but couldn't find anything specific to the WinXP Pro and Office
20003 Pro scenario. Any suggestions as to why this is happening and how I
can get around it?

Also, my 2nd disk Business Contact Manager refuses to install. It gets to
approx 95% the way through the installation and then rolls back. Would this
have anything to do with the problems experienced with error 1406 on Disk 1?
Believe Excel and Word were problems, but there may have been a third app
that I missed.

The Office 2000 install was complete and when I Upgraded I followed the
Upgrade choice and system selected Run All from My Computer.

Hoping for assistance to solve these to glitches. Thanks so much!!

Lynn

I have come across a solution which worked for someone else.

1. Open registry and Locate and select the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared\XML

2. On the Edit menu, click Permissions.

3. Click Add, and then type "Everyone" (without the quotation marks) in the dialog box that appears.

4. Click Check Names, and then click OK.

5. Select Everyone in the "Group or user names" list.

6. Under "Permissions for Everyone", click to select the Full Control check box in the Allow column. Note that the Read check box in the
Allow column is now also selected.

7. Select each user, in turn, in the "Group or user names" list, and then verify that no check boxes are selected in the Deny column. Click to
clear any check boxes that are selected in the Deny column.

8. Click the Advanced button, click to select the "Replace permission entries on all child objects" check box, and then click OK.

9. Click YES if you are prompted for confirmation, and then click OK to close the dialog box.

10. Restart your computer and test the install again.

Hi again, Darren,

Thanks for the information. I tried what you said, but have a feeling this
didn't work as it should. When I tried re-installing (repairing) Office it
seemed to jump at the end and gave me a message indicating Successfully
Installed (or similar wording).

I then gathered up Disk 2, Business and Contact Manager. Again it will not
install for me, as it rolls back at around 98% of the install. Would there
be anything in the original Office 2000 configuration that might be causing
a conflict here? Outlook 2000 was set there as Corporate/Newsgroup. I only
have POP e-mail, no Exchange. Can you clarify for me?

Before I made changes to the registry I copied it (exported) to my 2nd hard
drive. Just so I can be sure that my changes were correct how would I go
back and reinstate it onto my main C: drive? I've never done this before so
need a little assistance to make sure it's done properly.

I'm wondering now if I should go ahead and UNinstall Office 2003, and then
even UNinstall Office 2000? What else should be removed at the same time?
What about Updates for Office 2000, would they be removed automatically or
are they part of Control Panel\Add and Remove Programs to be done in
addition to the Office 2000 removal.

When I originally installed Office 2000 it was with Run All from My Computer
for both disks. Should I re-install it as perhaps just a minimum (but with
clipart) and then install Office 20003 with Run All from My Computer after
that process? In other words skip the Office 2000 updates?

If you could advise me on this please? This is such a silly problem. I've
spent many hours researching it without success.

Thanks once again.

Update: Following on from last message, went on-line and attempted to
install Office Updates (which were already downloaded, but not installed).
Would you believe they have now successfully installed? I think the
registry change did the trick. Thank you.

However, still have the problem with the Business Contact Manager disk. It
still won't install, rolls back.

Ideas on this please? Thanks again...
