HELP.. I'm panicing "error 1406"

Sometimes I think it would be better to reformat the hard drive.

two problems have arisen

1.) Somehow the administrator account has been deleted.. probably the
grandkids. When I try and create a new administrator account it says tht
that user already exists. Is there anyway I can retrieve the account for the
logon purposes.

2.) After my grandaoughter tried to install a game I bought her I tried to
install a different anti virus program to try it out. and I got the message
following:

Error 1406. Could not write value TypesSupported to key
\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\eventLog\Application\eEye Script Host.
Verify that you have sufficient access to
that key, or contact your support personnel.

Thinking it was that program I tried to reinstall the old anti virus program
and it gives me the same error 1406 with a few different words.

Anyone know how to fix this kind of stuff?

Or do I have to reformat the HD and reinstall my Xp.. hoping everything goes
ok!!

Error 1406 is a user disfunction command. And your grandkids may have hit a
function key or something after that. Try getting logged on and restoring it
to a previous time, then update as nescessary.

I think your installer is corrupted (windows one), so try to download the
latest windows installer from the link below but read these links before:

You need really this to download:

I read all the articles and then downloaded the new installer and it won't
even let me install the installer.. I think you are right about the corrupt
installer though because I have checked my "permissions" and I am listed as
an administrator

Okay, try this:
Run Disk cleanup, then open a run command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK] you will need your X CD handy.

Also, you may experiencing a Profile corruption, try to create a new profile
and see if you could install any software on the new one, if it is the case
you can copy the data from the old profile to the new.

Thanks I will try that after reading all the articles first. I probably
won't be able to do the repair because I thought of that and when I boot to
the xp disk and it asks for the administrator's password I can't put it in.
Someone (probably me thinking since I had administrator priviledges) deleted
the administrator's account. I don't even know if it's possible to recover
that account

Usually the Admin Password Blank if you installed it.
Try to go through the setup as ususal by :
1- insert the CD in and Hit any key to boot from the CD.
1- you will see at the bottom a message asking if you want to set up or
recovery console Hit R and so, don't select this option Yet, let the
procedure complete.
Then Hit F8 to accept the Eula and the copying of files will start.
Select setup, when you represented with the partition to setup the OS on or
Repair the Existing Operating System by Pressing " R" Now press R to Repair.
I don't know how the deletion happen, but you can look here for accounts:
C:\Documents and Settings\ <Users here>
and see if the Account there.
If you still have trouble then backup the important Data and nuke the HDD
(wipe it by formatting the partitions.

Well I read all the articles on the previous message and creating a new
profile didn't help. I guess it appears that I'll have to boot to the CD and
reformat the HDD after backing up "my Documents". One good thing is that I
suspect I'll have a clean Disk again. There should be a profile fixer of
some sort. .. one thing I did notice is that my profile is over a gig in
size while others are only a few meg. I wonder if that could be part of the
problem.

Yes, it is better to perform a clean install, make sure you delete the
existing partitions and create new one(s), then format (Full Format):
How to partition and format a hard disk in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348
How to Install Windows XP:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/winxp/install.mspx
How to install or upgrade to Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316941
Then after successful installation install the Anti-virus before connecting
to the internet, get the updates first and install it till SP2 then scan the
Backup and copy to your System where you want it to be.

Thanks for all the help.. just to bring everyone up to date I downloaded a
free program called SUPERAntispyware and did a check of my system. Wow what
a load of junk on it. Rebooted and things are now working fine. Amazing I
almost miss the fact I don't have to reformat and have aclean HD now. hehe
