error 1074 uninstalling Logitech QuickCam Pro4000

Dear All

I bought a logitech QuickCam Pro4000 to be used on a P4, XP Pro,
Office XP with ie6, McAfee Antivirus and Firewall

I installed the camera from the Add programs wizard, asked for the CD,
pointed to it. Installed without a problem, the camera was producing
image and sound. Great! Then realised that Outlook and ie6 could not
be instanciated, nor a connection to internet.

Not a problem! Restored the previous settings and machine (ie6 and
Outlokk a well) was back running.

Downloaded from the web the latest driver available on logitech
website. Plug and Play wizard conflicted with the logitech
Installshield wizard. The camera never worked and Outlook/ie6 were
frozen. Tried to restore the laptop to previous settings but it
failed. Decided to uninstall the driver by using the Add/Remove
wizard which failed creating a 1074 error.

I tried to reinstall SP1 for XP, but the machine unexpectedly switched
itself of. I need to boot XP under safe mode and cannot use Outlook or
ie6

Has anyone a fix / idea for solving it ? Is there a utility ? Please
help

Thanks in advance

XP death spiral! The following are steps I take for this; others might
have other suggestions. I suspect that the camera problem is in fact a
symptom of another problem entirely, perhaps HD. Check Event view logs
for repetetive errors, particularly HD or RAM or ??. From a command
prompt, type: chkdsk[space]/f[space]>c:\chkdsk.txt. Report any
checkdisk findings from c:\chkdsk.txt. Again from a command prompt
type:sfc[space]/scannow. System file checker will find and replace any
corrupt or missing system files. From Device Manager, expand to show
hidden devices and remove anything relating to the camera. Reboot and
see if the basic computer operation is OK, including the problems apps
you noted. [Alternatively, you could do a Repair Install of XP, but I
would still do checkdisk.] Then, if you feel confident, install SP1 and
other updates, especially security updates. During these updates, XP
will set restore points. If you encounter errors, then the restore
system is corrupt and that will have to be fixed. There are many
postings on fixing system restore. Do a Google Groups search.

At this point, you have a choice of installing the camera. If you want
to do this, review the installation instructions carefully. Many TWAIN
devices like cameras want the driver and software installed *before* the
camera is connected the first time so that XP's bozo hardware
enumeration does not get hopelessly confused and install some off-the
wall inappropriate driver. Since you have the original software still
installed but not removeable, you might want to repeat the original
installation following installation instructions precisely, then remove
the software and then the hardware as I suggested above. Then reboot
and install the new driver and software following the installation
instructions precisely, again. If the software suite is the same as the
original, you might just install from the updated installation file
which will fix the software uninstall problem.

Also, be sure to review Logitech's support site for their helpful hints
about this problem.
