Error 1001

I keep getting this error when I am running an application such as mIRC,
Morpheous, Real Player and Windows Media Player, or if I am using a program
to download a file. I get the following eroor message and am forced to shut
down the program and lose all my data "program has encountered an error and
needs to close". Sometimes I even get it in OUTLOOK. Does anyone know why
this error happens and is so common to so many programs?

I am running WindowsXP Professional Edition SP2. I have automatic update
turned on.

Can anyone ehelp me fix this? Thanks in advance!
