After reading this newsgroup. This error should have been removed a long time
ago. Well unfortunally, it isn't.
We have several computers, and on 1 it gives this error all the time.
All the rest is just doing fine. They all have the same OS; WinXP Pro with
SP2 in a domain with SBS 2003. Hardware differs.
I have installed the latest definition update 1.14.1821.5,
after it still giving this error, reinstalling the program.
with the same definition version, no better result.
How can this be resolved?

Regards,

Pieter

Hello Pieter,

Right-click My Computer, and choose Manage. Click on Disk Manager. In the
right pane, is the partition type for the drive that contains the C: volume
"basic" or "dynamic"?

If it is dynamic, this error is a known bug.

If it is a basic partition, other users with this error have found that
running a chkdsk scan on the partition has eliminated this error.

Windows Defender will continue to update properly, and Real-time protection
is fully effective, but scanning will not complete until this bug is fixed.

To summarize the new cause of the problem: if your system drive (the drive
on which you have installed Windows) is configured as a dynamic disk, rather
than as a basic disk, we will fail to load one of the registry hives during
a scan, and the error code 0x8050800c will be reported.

If you see this error, please verify whether or not your system drive is
configured as a basic or dynamic disk. You can do so by executing "start |
run | diskmgmt.msc" and then inspecting the value of the "Type" column for
your system drive in the list view.

If you see the error code 0x8050800c and your system drive is NOT configured
as a dynamic disk, please post a message in the newsgroups or send an
email to Mike Treit [Msft] (mtreit @ microsoft.com, but without the spaces)
so the Team can investigate further.

Thanks

Hi there.

Please make sure you are using the right email address (mtreit @
microsoft.com, but without the spaces) and try sending a mail.

This error (which is rather generic) typically occurs because of failure to
load a registry hive for some reason. It is expected that if you are
encountering this error, every scan will fail every time. It is not a
transient issue.

We are investigating a few different causes - we've already fixed several,
but there are definitely some remaining cases where this can happen.

If you send me an email (or just give me your email address) I can follow up
with some tools to help diagnose the cause of the problem.

Thanks
