I still get this error every time I scan. It is always scanning either
wowexec.exe or notepad.exe.

Latest build, latest updates, latest XP updates. No hardware, software, or
file system problems. No malware infestations.

I have it running successfully on two other computers, and it runs
successfully on another XP install on this computer. In fact if I boot up
the other XP, I can successfully scan the partition where this XP resides.

I have two accounts that I use frequently and the crash occurs when I run
from either. I have an Adminstrator account also that I haven't used in
months.

The only difference I can think of is I have Microsoft Visual Studio 2005
C++ Express installed on this XP install. I have an earlier version of
Visual Studio on the other XP installs.

What's the Windows Defender version --top version number found in help,
about?

If it is less that 1.1.1347.0, and you are not running Vista, go back to
www.microsoft.com, hit the more downloads button, and download Windows
Defender again and install over what you are now running. Spynet membership
will be reset to basic or lower, depending on your choice during the
install.

Can you run a scandisk on the partition that is erroring out? Is there
anything else unusual about the partition that you can mention--are you
using encryption tools of any sort? Getting any errors related to the
registry?

I ran scandisk. No problems. Nothing unusual about the partition. No
encryption. No registry errors.

I did find something interesting. If I do a custom scan and select the
entire partition, or just parts of it like the Windows folder, the scan runs
fine. When I scan the entire partition it scans about 215,660 objects. It
always completes a custom scan normally.

But if I try a quick scan or a full scan, it dies after about 25,548
objects. It's now crashing while scanning dvdplay.exe if I do a quick or
full scan.

I'm doing all these scans without reloading Defender. The environment looks
good. No memory or handle leaks that I can see. The bottom line is "custom
scan good, quick or full scan bad".

Truly wierd--since I confirmed in a chat just in the last hour that a custom
scan does a quickscan first.....

In the past, Mike Treit from Microsoft has been looking into this error, as
I recall. I'll ping him about this thread, but I don't know what his
priorities are at this time.

OK - one last question. Maybe you answered this already...anything unusual
about the hardware involved? Need a special driver for the drives?

Nothing unusual. Just a plain old Maxtor 6y160p0 IDE drive. No special
driver. It does happen to be my second drive. The slave drive on the
primary IDE channel.

I have quite a bit of software installed, and I have no problems. Microsoft
Office, Visual Studio, etc. I have been running Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta
for several months and it runs fine.

I run hard drive diagnostics periodically, and they find no problems with my
drives.

More specs. Pentium Northwood 2.4 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, Asus P4PE mobo.

And don't forget the Windows Defender installed on the other XP installation

The most unusual thing might be the installation of Visual Studio. It does
install a lot of DLLs and other things. I think they are mostly for
debugging but I guess sometimes they get picked up by other programs.

This install of XP has the new Visual Studio 2005 and it never caused any
problems that I have seen.

The other XP installs, that run Windows Defender okay, have an old Visual
Studio 6, which dates back to 2000. I have found a few minor problems caused
by installing VS 6 but they were easily resolved.

Yeah--I don't have any idea what this would be. Let's see if you hear from
Mike Treit--he may want to collect some data to give them a picture of
what's happening.
