Can you check the event log (start | run | eventvwr) and look at the System
log for any error messages from "Windefend" ? There should be an error entry
with some more information.

If you could provide the information from the event log that should help
diagnose the problem.

Thanks

This appears likely to be the same issue that has been reported previously,
where a corrupt or otherwide unloadable registry hive can cause the scan to
error out. (The error code may be 0x80280800c or 0x8050800c.)

We will most likely have a fix for this issue in the near future.

I am pasting some previous analysis about this error below. I believe it
applies here as well.

== Error 0x80280800c when performing a quick scan or full scan ==
This error happens when failing to load one of the registry hives on your
machine for some reason. We treat that (incorrectly) as a fatal error. When
we have seen this happen before, it is because of some file corruption on
disk, in at least one case caused by a failing hard drive.

I would recommend running chkdsk and a disk defrag on your machine if you
encounter this error, and see if that addresses the problem. If not, we
should release a fix for this along with one of our signature updates in the
near future.

Thanks

I have been experiencing the same problem for the past two days - when I
installed this program three times, uninstalled it twice, attempted both
quick and full scans numerous times and always got the same error message. i
also did a disc scan and a disc defragment - restarted my computer and got
the same error when I did a scan. However, one added piece of information
may be of some use to you and the programmers.

Each time I get an error message while attempting a scan, the message comes
as the program scans object:

C:/WINSOWS\system32\WOWEXEC.EXE

I hope this helps to resolve the problem. And, if other users are
experiencing the same "shut down", I ask that they confirm their experience.

Thanks for your help and the information,

Once again, I have same problem here today in laptop only.
Each time I get an error message 0x8050800c when quick scan stops:

C:/WINDOWS\system32\WOWEXEC.EXE (wow~~~~~)

I have two computers (OS: xp home edition) laptop and desktop.
I installed WD Beta2 simultaneously each computer.
Nothing happened in desktop.

I received the same error meesage when i first tried a scan with Defender.
The Scan stopped at the WOWEXEC.EXE file. I ran chkdsk and will defrag
later. I hope this is just something that can be resolved at the next
update.

Mike,

I just installed the latest version - after I uninstalled the prior latest
version that I had installed a few days ago. I also did a disc scan and
defragmentation and I used window washer to clear up what had been missed.

The exact same problem occurred while the installation program did it's
quick sacn - after the program had been updated with the latest driver and
definitions.

Is Micorsoft working this issue and when can we expect an update to resolve
this issue? Or, would it be safe and advisable for me just to remove the
WOWEXEC.EXE file?

Thanks.............

coast_dreamer- since the last time I have posted, I have tried several more
times to run a scan and I have gotten the error message at other files
besides the WOWEXEC. I considered deleting WOWEXEC but now I think I'll just
wait and see if MS comes up with a fix. Otherwise I will be deleting files
right and left.

See Mike Treit's message earlier in this thread.

I'd not delete anything, and just hold off for the time being. I haven't
seen this one myself, but if Mike says they are working on it, I'd avoid
taking action until we see a code update, if you can stand it.

I'm not sure I believe the problem is with a corrupted hive or disk....
I have updated several PC's that was working fine to the newest update:
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1186.0
Signature Version: 1.13.1282.6

As soon as I do.... it quits working and gives the error approx 22 to 24
seconds into the scan... and seems to fail on the same file every time...
""" c:\windows\system32\dvdplay.exe """

Any idea how long before the next update will be released to fix this issue?

I have same as exactly you have it.
Seems to fail on the same file every time...
C:\windows\system32\dvdplay.exe

Please let me know what is solution ??

Thank you ^&^

For the moment, there is no solution. This is a bug, and we are awaiting
new code from Microsoft, which will come via the normal updates to the
program, to resolve it.

The file that generates the identical error for me is
C:\windows\system32\notepad.exe

Just thought i'd add some info for the bug repairers

What's the date on your definition file?

If it is March 23rd, or later, you should have a new engine which is
intended to eliminate this error.
