Error 0x80042109

I can't seem to get my Outlook 2002 to connect to my
outgoing server for my Earthlink account. I can receive
mail through my cable modem, but can't send unless I dial
in. I want to eliminate the dial up and just use cable
modem, but nobody seems to be able to help me. My error
message is: 0x80042109 'Outlook is unable to connect to
your outgoing email server'.

Anyone else have this problem?

I assume that Earthlink is *not* your cable provider. The problem is that
your cable provider is blocking access to all SMTP servers (like
Earthlink's) but their own, as an anti-spam measure. You have two options

1) See if your cable provider has an agreement with Earthlink that will
allow you to use Earthlink as your ISP while connected through the cable
provider's network (I know that Comcast and Earthlink have such an
agreement - that's how I'm set up).
2) Change the outgoing server name in your account to point to an SMTP
server provided by your cable provider.

I am having the same problem with Yahoo. The e-mail I
send from Outlook just sits in the Outgoing mail box. It
gives me the same error message.

What's strange is that it has worked for the last year, I
haven't made any changes and according to Yahoo's website
they haven't either.

Yahoo wasn't the one that made the change - your cable provider has blocked
access to all but their own SMTP servers, so you won't be able to connect to
Yahoo's, Earthlink's, or any other SMTP server. You'll have to set all your
accounts to point to an SMTP server provided by your cable provider.
