Erratic Mouse pointer

For the last month my mouse pointer moves about the display randomly as I
type. Doesn't matter what program I am using including now as I am writing
this message. I have run three different spyware programs and have Trend
Micro AV which all show my system as free from any unwanted files. I am
running Vista business on Dell Inspiron 8600 with 2 gigs of ram and have
tried three different optical mice connected to usb with same results. The
same symptoms occur with no mouse attached.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

RichC

I solved the problem by disabling the touch pad and using just an optical
mouse. From my research I came across a couple of forums where users of
various brands of notebooks experienced the same problem and in many
instances, either the replacement of the touchpad or pointer or total
disabling of the touchpad is necessary to correct the problem. My Inspiron
has both a touchpad and pointer and I noticed that as I touched keys closer
to the pointer the more erratic the cursor became. Fortunately, I was able
to disable the touchpad in the BIOS. It may also be possible to uninstall
the drivers within Windows and accomplish the same thing.
