Erractic Mouse Movement

Over the last week my mouse has developed this erratic movement - as I move it across the screen it briefly hangs up.
I have changed nothing about my hardware for many months.
I actually have 2 mice attached to the Gateway computer:
a Microsoft wireless optical USB mouse
and a wired PS/2 ball mouse.
The problem is present with both mice.
Yes, I have changed the batteries and re-synced the wireless mouse.
Yes, I have installed the latest version of Intellipoint.
I have even used msconfig to limit the number of things that load at startup.
I have scanned for viruses.
I am at a loss...
I believe this problem started with the latest Windows update, but I'm not sure.
I've tried restoring to earlier restore points, but the problem keeps recurring.
If this is a hardware problem, why did it start our of the blue?
I think there is some software interfering with the mouse, but I can't figure out what.
Please help!

Hi Ken,

This can happen if your display properties have been changed from 32 to 16
bit. If this is the case, revert. If this is not the case, many have
reported mouse/scrolling issues due to an update, explained here:
