epson printer problem

Hi
I have an Epson Stylus Photo 810 and run Windows XP. My printer suddenly
stopped printing and an error comes up that the document failed to print
(talk about stating the obvious!). It happens on very small files and bigger
files and sometimes won't even print the test page. It takes an age to start
printing if it decides it wants to and at the bottom of the page it says
'Word is preparing to background print the document' ... that is when the
failure to print message usually comes up. When it does print it more often
than not stops partway through and that same failure to print message pops
up. I have tried uninstalling the printer and software and also have up to
date drivers. On the last installation I did it searched for a cable
connection to the printer and said it couldn't be found. Nevertheless the
printer did have a go at printing before letting me down again. Any ideas
please? Could it just be a faulty printer cable even though it hasn't been
disconnected?
TIA

If you have a PC owner friend, try your printer on his PC with your
cable.

Can I respectfully suggest that you let the matter drop because you are
starting to act more in the realm of the troll than a useful member of
the group.

Looking completely dispationately at the response Milou gave, it's
relevant, might provide a fix, and is on topic. So why not jump on his
posts IF they aren't relevant, rather than ALL of them..

Last time I'll be posting on the subject though or hypocrisy will rule.

Is your hard disk full to bursting? It could have bloated itself with
temp files or something, and it might not have space to generate the
printer's file. Is there a computer independent test page that it can
print (ie: pressing buttons on the printer to generate the test page).

Have you tried a different cable? Are you printing via parallel, usb (or
network), if usb/network have you added any other appliance that might
be interfering?

I would suggest considering a few things.

You don't mention which type of connection the printer is on. If USB,
if it is on a hub, try connecting it directly to the computer's USB
connection.

However, I suspect the problem is lack of adequate spooler space on your
"C" drive. You need to have a clean space on your spool drive (on XP it
defaults to your C drive) large enough to spool your documents. Make
sure you have enough space available and that it is contiguous
(defragged). A lot of smaller broken up parts can slow down or make the
spooler fail to work. Also, if you are running virtual memory, a
Photoshop scratch disk or other programs that use virtual (disk) memory
they may be using up drive space that appears to be available.

I had a similar problem with an Epson R300. It would print a few
pages, then stop. A search of the internet suggested that some
AMD-type motherboards can be underpowered at the USB port.

I added an inexpensive powered USB hub between the computer and the
printer and the problem went away.

First, I would advise that you start a new article, that way you will draw
more attention than posting in this article, always best with your own
heading, you will then get replies relating your own subject. I asume you
are getting this message when you boot, if so we need some more info. If
this is the case you need to look in Device Manager and see if the drive is
marked with a yellow marker if so uninstall the drive in Device Manager and
re-boot it should show up. If this is not the case, as I have said, a lot
more info please.
