Epson Perfection 4180 Scanner Software Problem

Hello, My scanner has been working for over a year but failed recently
when I wanted to use Abbyy Finereader Pro 8 but selected Epson's Smart
Panel instead, I cancelled the scan and then I had an XP2 error message
ScanToFile application needs to close . . .

I have successfully used the scanner from MS Camera and Scanner Wizard,
so the scanner itself is operational and selecting Epson's Smart Panel
option Copy Shop works.

It appears that any scanner request that uses the Epson Scan 2.5E
module fails with an XP2 ...needs to close... Microsoft has not
responded to several "Tell Microsoft about this problem" The scanner
won't work from Paint Shop Pro 9 or Photoshop Elements 3 either

I have unistalled and reinstalled the software and downloaded Epson
Scan 2.65E had support from Epson who want me to try the scanner on
another computer. So as to isolate the scanner and Epson's software
from my PC.

At present the Epson Scan 2.5E driver is installed and I have not been
advised by Epson to reinstall the 2.65E driver.

My PC is a Dell 8200 there is plenty of hard disk space. I have two
hard drive's one of them is used for video and graphics storage.

Has anyone got any ideas as to what factors prevent a perfectly
functional scanner from working as it used to, bearing in mind that it
is possible to scan with it using Microsoft's module.

Epson support after several email suggestions came up with running
Epson Scan in win98 mode. This has worked.
