Nothing happens

When I press any of 4 buttons on my scanner nothing happens. I wonder why,
so I ask Epson. They asked me to reinstall their software and retest the
scanner. After doing so, no change . The Epson model 4490 works properly
when I operate it from the Program menus. I have checked Device Mgr and
Properties menu on Control Panel, Scanner Camera, Epson 4490 scanner is set
to use Epson Creativity suite.

How can I determiine what happens when I press a button on the scanner?

It sounds to me like the panel went bad. If the scanner is still under
warranty, you might want to talk to Epson about getting it repaired (It might
not be worth the trouble, especially if you have to ship it to them).

I have an Epson 1240U scanner. I have never used the buttons on the scanner.
I use a Twain driver.

I actually never use the Epson software. I just use Acquire in whatever
program I am running at the time.

I do not think the button functionality is important. I plan to use
ScanSoft's OmniPage 15. Any advice I am all ears.

How can I track what happen? I press a button and some file should be
accessed. Either the file was accessed or it wasn't accessed. If not, where
did it look and was the file there.

Epson Technical Support said that their software is installed properly, and
the scanner is working properly. Microsoft Device Manager reported the
driver is correct and the device is enabled.

How can I track what happens when I press a button on the scanner?

I agree with Galen's answer. If you have a graphics program with an
aquire image feature see if you can get the scanner to work using that
program.

It's also possible that you need to assign functions to the buttons from
inside whatever "scanner management" app Epson supplied.
