Epson 1270 problem

Linda B

I am trying to print some black & white photos using my Epson 1270
printer. The problem is, The printer refuses to print unless I replace
the empty color cartridge - in spite of the fact that it's not even
being used! These are Grayscale documents - they use no color
whatsoever. I can't replace the color cartridge because I will be
retiring this printer very soon and the color ink would just be wasted.
Does anyone know of a work-around for this? The black cartridge is
almost full, I would hate to throw it out. I've searched the Epson
website to no avail. Please help!
thanks,
Linda B

The printer still uses the color inks to print in B&W unless you specify black
only in the print driver. Even then the ocacsional head cleaning will use up
some color ink. Your best bet is a cheap laser printer. Cost a lot less in
the long run

I did specify black in the driver.

The printer will not work without a color cartridge that has ink in it. No
way around it. Why not buy a cheap aftermarket cartridge?

Or you could get a cartridge resetting program like InkLevel or SSC to
"refill" the cartridge. Might be OK if you're sure that no color ink
is being used, because you don't want to try and use an empty
cartridge for fear of head damage. Or look on eBay or elsewhere for
an "Epson cartridge resetter," they only cost about $8. In any case,
these printers will not function unless both cartridges show up as
having ink in them, regardless of your printing mode.

Thanks for the help. The printer is pretty much dead because the bracket
that holds the color cartridge is broken. After a lot of fussing and
jury-rigging, I was able to get the color cartridge I had just bought to
work, so the ink wasn't wasted. But it would be insane to risk buying
another color cartridge on the chance that I **might** be able get it to
work. Can't see buying a chip resetter and putting more money into a
printer that is just a throwaway at this point. It's just a shame I have
to waste that Black cartridge. Thanks again.
