Ending page numbers

I can't figure out how to stop page numbering in a section of a Word 2003
document. The first section is about 56 pages with page numbering. I have
a section 2 and 3 with only 1-2 pages each where I do not want page
numbering. If I get rid of the page numbering in the footer in section 2 or
3 the page numbering in section 1 disappears!

On the header/footer toolbar, there is a little icon with arrows between
pages that controls whether headers and footers are linked to those in
the previous section or not.

Put the cursor in section 2. View Header/footer. Unlink the footer in
section 2 from previous (section 1).

Repeat for section 4. Now you can delete the numbers in Section 2 and 3
without them affecting anything.

Thanks. That little link/unlink button is tricky. I got it right after a
few tries.
