Encryption of a folder on an external drive

Hi Experts,

I have a SATA external drive attached to a Win2K
SP4 computer.

While connected to the computer, I can understand
the encryption being
effective on the external drive.

But what about the drive being taken away and used
with another computer?
Is the encryption still valid on the external
drive or is the encryption valid only
when used from the Win2K OS?

TIA

If you refer to EFS, this relies on a key stored within your userprofile. It
does NOT, as is often thought, encrypt the files with your logon-password
alone.

If this key is lost, the files are toast. Thus if the external drive is for
backups, this is a highly unsatisfactory situation.

Take a look at truecrypt for a better, more stable, solution that will
encompass access from multiple computers. (but only one at a time)
