encountered a problem and has to shut down

I try to start internet exploer and it goes right into the
screen to send a report or not. I tried to download a new
version, says i have the latest versions and stops. Cant
uninstall it either. Help!!

Make a note of the precise text of any error message. You can always look at these in Event Viewer. Start, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID: and Source Description are important.

From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions."

That should allow IE to work. Then Run CWShredder from
http://www.net-integration.net/tools/hijackthis.html It's been the most
helpful with this problem. CWShredder is only about 125 KB so it could be
downloaded from another machine onto a floppy disk if necessary.

You might also be able to browse and download programs from the address bar
of Windows Explorer.

You may have to follow CWShredder with Ad-aware and/or Spybot S&D.

Hi Don (and Tim),

I had the same problem with IE/XP that Tim describes. I
downloaded the Spybot S&D tool from the website you
mentioned, after disabling the third party browser
extensions. Then I used the Spybot-tool to clean-up the
registry (don't forget to update Spybot before you
actually clean-up) and re-enabled the third party browser
extensions. Now my IE works perfectly again. Thanks for
your advice!
