Use Microsoft Word. Wordpad can only open doc files not save them. RTF format is as good as a doc format, just bigger in file size and doesn't support program addin to Word.
I'm not sure what you mean by "encoded", but to turn a Word Pad file
into a Word document, open the file in MS Word and Save As a Word
document (.doc).
