On the 18th of January, I will be attending a 'workshop' of about 20 people communicating with a company elsewhere via individual i-pads or iPhones, supplied by the organisers of the event. I do not own an i-phone/pad.

Being partially deaf, this presents obvious problems for me. Do any of you know of any good reliable i-pad/phone apps etc that will translate whatever they are saying into text for me, please?

TIA

I would recommend you use headphones that have a built in microphone. That way you will experience the best sound quality at a louder level. If you use a hearing aid and have a loop amp system at home you could connect the output of the iPad to the loop amp, which will allow you to pick up the sound directly into hearing aid when it's in the 'T' position.
