emptying deleted items folder in Windows Mail under Vista O/S

I cannot empty the DELETED ITEMS folder. I tried (1)Edit "empty deleted
items folder", (2)highlighting all and pressing DEL, (3)deleting
individually,(4) exiting windows mail (after insuring the setting is done for
empty on exit). I am ignored, and the folder size is increasing out of
control. Using (2) and (3) above I get "unknown error" message.

Download and install this Microsoft hotfix:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it only mentions Outbox, it works for all mail folders.
