Emptying Deleted Items deletes other messages

After receiving new email and deleting some of them, which moves them to the
deleted folder, I right click on the deleted items folder. I select 'empty
deleted items folder' and sure enough the items in the folder are removed but
so are any new items that I left in the in-box. This cannot be how this is
supposed to work. Any ideas?

I am using 6.0.6000,16386 under Vista.

Are you sure they're being deleted and not hidden? While viewing in the
Inbox: View | Current View. Is: Show All Messages checked?
