Deleted Messages folder will not empty

Until recently every time I exited Windows Mail the contents of the
"deleted messages" folder would automatically be removed. Now they
are still there. I checked the settings and the box IS checked to
empty the folder when exiting the program. Also, when I click on Edit/
Empty deleted items folder" nothing happens.

Any suggestions?

This will help show you how to fix this stuck undeletable email message
problem in Windows Mail for all folders. Afterwards, it should start
deleting the emails on exit again.

Installing the KB941090 update will just fix the problem for now. You
must stop the cause to prevent it from happening again. Read the section
titled "FIRST" in this tutorial about antivirus other security programs
to help prevent this from happening again, then install the KB941090
Microsoft Update in the section titled "SECOND" to fix and be able to
delete the stuck message from the problem folder.

I went to install the update you reference and was told that it does
not apply to my system. I have Vista SP1.

As a test, look in the Deleted Items folder and try to manually delete
the message using the instructions in the manual section of the
tutorial.

I can delete them by ctrl-a and hitting "delete" from the Delete Items
folder. It's just that they don't automatically delete when I close
the program.

Sure. Email clients and web browsers are pretty much
independent of each other.
I use both Firefox and IE, as well as WM and WLM.
