empty system files

MY COMPUTER IS A DELL DIMENSIONS 4400, 256 MB DDR SDRAM, PENTIUM 4 PROCESSOR
AT 1.6 GHz. I have xp pro and service package 2.
There are two system files in my root directory, config and io. This fact
might be the reason of my problems (no pagefile.sys file exists and this
gives low VM, which causes my system to crash repeatedly). In lay language,
is there any way I can solve at least one of these problems? Are they
interrelated? I posted before in 'no page file' on 1/17 under the header
Page file and VM problems.

Leave those files alone.

Did you check to see if you have a pagefile set? If you do, it may be your
antivirus program that is interfering with the pagefile. I have found that
Norton Antivirus 2004 and 2005, if it is set to monitor during the boot up,
will prevent the pagefile from being created, exactly every other boot. I
have checked this action on numerous computers and it is precisely
repeatable.

If you remove the check to start antivirus during the boot process Norton
does not screw with the pagefile. Nice, as they tell you that the default
setting is ON. In fact, ver 2005 will have this setting off by default, even
though the note by the setting says it is preferable to have it on.

I have changed to ZoneAlarm Security Suite and damned if it doesn't do the
same thing. AVG Antivirus does NOT cause this to happen

I do have a pagefile set, but it is ignored, I have pc cillin. Nirton brought
me many problems and I did not get any assistance from them. I do not know if
it is set to monitor during the boot up. My impr3ession is that it is not
(how do I find this for certain?) The fact of the matter is that once I click
on the OK button of the screen that tells me that I have no paging file or
the page file is too small, the system takes quite long to install my
settings, and one of the last things to come up is the pc cillin logo.

Thank you,

Dora

Do you mean files or folders?

In Windows Explorer select Tools, Folder Options, View, Advanced
Settings and make changes as follows:

1. Check box before "Show hidden files and folders".
2. Uncheck box before "Hide extensions before known file types".
3. Uncheck box before "Hide protected operating system files".

Now look at the two files ( I think you mean folders).

Now to try to solve your system crashes! Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring
Task Manager and select the Process Tab.
What is the Commit Charge?

How large is your hard disk and how much free space? In Windows Explorer
right click on your C drive and select Properties. The information
should be there.

Gerry:

I meant files. I saw them precisely when I followed the three steps you
suggest in the wiewing field. And they appeared as config.sys and io.sys.
Besides this, the icon is not of folder but of file. My commit charge is
238368K, my disk sapce is 37.2 GB and I have a free space of 21.4 GB. Thank
you for any further assistance.

The Commit Charge on the bottom of Process tab is shown as 238368 /
??????. What is the second figure?

Sorry, Gerry.
The commit charge reads 224888K/238368K. The first number is varying all
the time, the second remains constant. There are times when the first one
even reads 0.

Thanks,

Dora

The second figure should be larger!

How is your virtual memory ( pagefile ) set up? Right click My Computer
icon on Desktop and select Properties, Advanced, Performance -Settings,
Advanced, Virtual Memory, Change. What does it say?

Well, the second figure is larger. My virtual memory is set up with paging
file size initial at 400MB, final at 700MB, only disk C:, my only hard drive.
But no matter what I set the virtual memory to, or even if I set system
managed file, the currently allocated value always reads 0 MB.

Dora

When you make your virtual memory selection are you double clicking on
the Set button before clicking on OK and exiting? Recheck the selection
after rebooting the machine to verify that your settings have been
accepted.

Yes, I do click on set and next on OK. I also recheck the selection before
and after rebooting, even though when I reboot or shut off and start I always
get the window with the message that my virtual memory is too law, that
windows is taking care of setting it, that my paging file is too small or
does not exist (it does not exist!!). I searched for it under other names,
anything that will bring it on.

Is it possible that I got infected with a boot virus? I was looking in the
MS database and one of the examples is that if the W32.Netsky.D@mm worm
attacks it would delete the following registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\PINF
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WksPatch

They are missing. It appears that mostly what is described in
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/topics/serversecurity/avdind_4.mspx#EFAA

is happening with my machine. Do you think that I really have no choice but
reformat my hard disk? I'd appreciate a sound opinion. Thank you.

Single click or double click the SET button?

Have you ever downloaded any memory boosters or the like? Some web sites
can offer these and it can be easy to accept the offer when they are
best declined!

Has the hard disk been partitioned?

Try Start, Run, type regedit and hit OK. Then find the following in the
Registry.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\Memory
Management

What is the data shown for the "Pagingfiles" key? Do NOT try changing
anything in the Registry!

I have been reviewing the thread in January, They certainly made you
jump the hoops <g>!

How is your hard disk formatted? FAT32 or NTFS? Right click on drive in
Windows Explorer and select Properties.

You only need a single click on the set button!

Gerry:

I thank you very much for your prompt replies. This is answering the two
last mails you've sent me. I click only once when I set the paging file, both
for apply and for OK.
I have never downloaded any memory booster.

Looking into the registry at the location you've indicated, I found that the
pagingfiles key has no data. However, at the same location there is a
TempPage File key that has REG_DWORD type and for data it says 0x00000001(1).

The disk showed a second partition at some point which somebody told me it
was a logical partition (no name on it, FAT32 type). I probably messed around
so much that that partition does not show any longer when I look into my
computer information. My hard drive is formatted NTFS.

Try the resolution in this Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:

Error Message: Your System Has No Paging File, or the Paging File Is Too
Small

Another thought. Do you have the Intel Application Accelerator
installed? If yes what version? Select Start, Control Panel, Add/ Remove
Programs. There were problems associated with early versions.

Gerry:

I tried it, even though I believe I had tried it in the past. This does not
work. However, I read at the bottom of the MS document that the system
account may have been removed. Actually, when I started in Safe Mode, I
noticed that there were only two accounts, one named Administrators and the
other another account that is set, but not mine. I did not see the Everyone
group within the groups when I clicked through the tree on Computer
Management/systemtools/local users and groups/groups

Now, I do have the Intel Application Accelerator. Quite frankly, I do not
see a reason why this program should cause the damage, if it did not do it
before. If I remove it, can I get a later version at a later time?

I went to the site you indicate. What is it that you specifically suggest?
That I try any of the sponsor links? That I subscribe to google?
