Empty Install Directory for Win XP Fax

I know this is rehashing a topic from an OLD thread, BUT...

I had tried to install Win XP Fax, got the 'need SP2 CD' notification,
ordered the SP2 CD, received same, tried to install and got zip. Nada. Then
further research told me I had to expand a long list of files, which I did,
then tried to
install, and I had success..or so I thought. Start/All
programs/Accessories/Communications/Fax...EMPTY!!!

I followed Jon's instructions (from a 2005 post), making certain the files
are expanded and in the correct directories (they are), and STILL have an
empty Fax program file. My modem works, I get indications of a successful
install, click on Finish, but ... nothing.

Win XP Sp2, Dell Latitude C610 (laptop) integral PCtel 2304WT V.9x MDC Modem
Data/Fax (got this from the diagnostics Query Log). The modem can dial out
with no problem, and diagnostics indicates that it is functioning properly.
This machine is in a CDock II Docking station. I have tried installing docked
and undoscked, same result. I also tried with a working external USB modem
(from my spouse's machine) with the same result.

ANY help here will be greatly appreciated!

Did you mention the shortcuts were missing from the Fax folder, in an
earlier post? If so, here's what I have in the Fax folder.

Fax Console
Target: %SystemRoot%\system32\FxsClnt.exe /new
Start In: %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%

Fax Cover Page Editor
Target: %SystemRoot%\system32\FxsCover.exe
Start In: "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\Fax\Personal
Coverpages"

Send a Fax...
Target: %SystemRoot%\system32\FxsSend.exe
Start In: %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%

Yes, That was probably my post earlier.
There are no shortcuts in my Fax Folder.
I went to System 32 and created desktop shortcuts to fxsend, fxssvc,
fxscover, and fxsclnt. Some seem to function, but if I try to DO anything
from within in them I get error mesages. I.E.:

Fxssvc results in a black blank command line screen where I don't know what
command to issue.

Trying to open fxssend results in a error message "To send a fax you ust
have a fax printer installed. You can either attach a local fax device to
your computer, which installs a local fax printer, or you can add a remote
fax printer connection."

I can open Fax Console, and the resulting shortcut icons link to the
appropriate areas. BUT if I go to Tools/Configure Fax I get "A connection to
the fax server cannot be made" error. Also, No Fax Printer Installed is
showing in the Fax Console task bar.

I can create Fax Cover Page in Cover Pausing fxscover.

I can dial out with my modem, so I know that function works, and
diagnostices indicates no problems, BUT I can't send a fax. I attached an
external Fax modem with the same results. The external works on my Gateway
Win XP Laptop.

Going to Printers/Faxes shows HPLaserJet printer, Microsoft XPS Document
Writer, LKD15F97 (wireless HP Inkjet), PaperPort B&W, PaperPort Color,
SnagIt8 Printer, but no fax or fax printer.

I'm searching fo help on un-installing/reinstall FAX to see if I can get it
working.

Hopefully I will get more replies with solutions, but it has been rather
quiet on this thread!.

Did the external faxmodem come with fax software? If so, try installing
it. As far as the XP fax software, you might try a reinstall from
Add/Remove Windows Components. Sorry, no better suggestions.

I am getting similar fax problems with message that fax server cannot be
found and fax console permanently refreshing. Mine worked fine up to and
way beyond SP2 right up until I took up a Symantec option for a free upgrade
of Internet Security 2006 to 2007. That update caused Windows to crash. When
I reloaded windows the fax would not work as above. Uninstalling the Fax
service and then restarting and re installing the fax service works until the
PC is restarted again. I did a test for Symantec which involved starting the
PC with only Windows and Symantec services loaded and the fax console worked.
Returning back to normal and the fax console failed. It would seem to be a
Windows problem, which in my case was caused by a Norton IS upgrade. Any
body else cocme accross that a got a permanent ssolution yet?
