I know it sounds basic, but ...
Is it possible to insert a sound file and have it saved INSIDE the
pps / ppt ?
Seems to me that PPoint only links to media on local drives.

Yep, this is possible with .wav files (and with a little trickery, with
mp3s). See here for instructions:

You can embed wav files. For mp3, you can convert it to wav or use CDex to
add a RIFF-Wav header.
