Sound File Cuts by 4 secs help!

Inserted an MP3 that is 18 secs long - plays fine in Media Player - played
fine to start with in PPoint (2003). Got it running over a couple of slides
- no problems. Now it has started cutting off 4 secs of the track and stops
dead. Sound file in PP says it is only 14 secs long when it is 18. Have
tried reinserting it - same problem ..... urgent help needed !!!! Thank you.

I only used 2007 version during Trial period. No knowledge about 2003.
In 2007 version, if I click Animations, and look to the extreme right, I'll
find an option called " Automatically after ( x )sec."
So, if I have a sound file 18 sec long, and I have, say ,10 slides in my
presentation, I'll then choose Automatically after 1.8 sec.
What I have done is to have slide changes every 1.8 seconds. That would
basically allow the sound file to complete playing.
Do you have a similar option in your 2003 version ?

I have same problem as sally t -- and I'm using PowerPoint 2007. I've tried
adjusting the animations timing to add time for it to complete - but it
doesn't. Onsound optiond, "total playing time" is mysteriously shorter than
Windows Media Player, Windows Explorer and other media players.

I am a little confused.
Your music finishes early or late ?
Either case, why go by any media player ?
Your sound file, be it MP3 or Wav, tells you the length of play. Does it not
? Use that data.
Furthermore, determine what is the difference with your watch or some time
piece, then make your adjustment at the " Automatically after " option. Add
or subtract accordingly.
Example : you need 5 more seconds. You have 10 slides. Then add 0.5 sec to
the Automatically After box.
Not an exact science. Sometimes I had to add or subtract 0.02 sec. Sometimes
I purposely add an extra slide to make up for time needed. Just play with
the numbers.
Or, did I misunderstand your problem entirely ?

etc.
In Power Point 2007, when I click on the speaker icon on the slide and pull
down the "Sound Options" tab, it gives info about the file path AND it gives
"Total Playing Time" of 6 seconds !! So the music cuts off prematurely
before the real end of the clip. I have tried adjusting the slide change
timing in Animations to 10 seconds, 12 seconds, etc. Doesn't help. Question
is : Where does Power Point get the media file information that tells it my
clip is only 6 sec. -- when it is really 8 sec. ?

Try this, and this is my last trick in my sleeve :
Left side where the all the slides are shown, click the first slide,
scroll to the last slide, press Shift key and HOLD,
click the last slide.
All your slides are now selected.
Animations > Automatically After...... enter the time per slide. That's it.
Play it, see if it works this time.

Ah, after one day has gone, now you tell me your slides each has different
timing. Would be most beneficial to both had you said that right at the
beginning. Don't you think so ?

I don't have 2007 ppt anymore. What I had been saying was out of memory.
There is an option called Rehearse Timing, click that and decide which
slides needed to be shaved off a second or two. It can't be that hard. Just
review your presentation as a whole, and see how many slides can be
shortened in transition, then make adjustment accordingly. Unless you have a
restriction whereby certain segment of the music must be played WITHIN each
slide, but I doubt that such is your predicament.

In fact, that is my predicament -- I have a large number of slides, each
with a photo, a caption and an MP3 of between 08 and 14 seconds. Each slide
is to remind visible until the music ends. The problem is that a few of the
MP3's in the PowerPoint presebntation terminate before they have played
completely (i.e., an 8-second MP3 terminates after 6-seconds, leaving
2-seconds of music unplayed. The "animations" slide change is set for
10-seconds to allow the music to play -- but the "Sound Options" info for the
MP3 clip says that it is only 6-seconds of "Total Playing Time".

If I could find out how the "Sound Options" gets its info, perhaps I could
manually correct this mis-information. Thanks again for your effort !

Maybe you had missed one step before you did the Animations routine.
Go to the left side under Slide ( or something like that , remember I don't
have 2007 ver. anymore),
click the 1st. slide,
scroll to the last slide,
press Shift key and HOLD,
click the last slide.
All you slides should be framed/shaded.
Now go to Animations, re-set your timing to 9 sec.
Does it work this time ?

Sorry. I guess I haven't explained my situation clearly. Each slide has a
different length MP3 clip (6-sec, 9-sec, 12-sec, 14-sec, etc.). So each
slide needs to remain up for the length of the music, then advance to next
slide. It works 60 of the 63 slides, but 3 cut off the clip prematurely.
The slides all advance at the time they should. The problem is tat
PowerPoint "thinks" one of the MP3 clips is 6-seconds (and says so on the
"Sound Options" info tab), when it is really 8-seconds long. Do you know
where PowerPoint gets the mis-information ? Thanks again.

This thread is getting too long and we are getting no where.
Pardon my accusing tone, but you have been giving one " stipulation " at a
time. Next time, please put everything on the table.
The only option that I know of is by using Rehearse Timings option under
Slide Show tab and change those 3 slides.
You do know which are the 3 slides in question, right ?
I am not sure how to change timings of 3 slides out of 63, I never had to do
that.
I would try to highlight one of the 3 slides > Slide Show > Rehearse
Timings, make the change there.
Repeat same for the other 2 slides.
If that was not allowed, I would have to start from scratch, did the
Rehearse Timings individually from slide #1 to 63.
I am out of idea.

Your idea of opening in an editing program and changing the name seems to
work !! I'll test it fully tomorrow, but initial results are positive.
Power Point mis-reads the two 8 second clips as 00:31and 00.36 -- but they
play correctly !

I received the file, and PowerPoint, when it plays the sound clip in the
slideshow mode does in fact truncate it, and I have no idea why.
