Hi Mangler:
You can do a lot to stop it yourself.
I operate a 4-computer LAN with a router connected to a cable modem. Three
of the PCs use Windows XP and the other one uses Windows 98 SE. Every one of
these PCs has a unique email address. Yet it is extremely rare that any of
these computers ever receive trash email - not in the past and certainly not
now during the "Swen" crisis.
I use the following steps to prevent this nuisance in each of my computers:
I keep all of my operating systems up-to-date by regularly using the Windows
Update function.
I do not, and never have, used my real email address in NG posts. All that
does is invite the entire world to fill my inbox with spam, and worse.
I created a message rule that deletes from the server any incoming email
that does NOT have my real email address in the TO or CC line.
I use currently updated anti-virus software (AVG, free), currently updated
anti-spyware/anti-adware software (AD-Aware, free), a popup stopper (from
Panicware, free), and fireware (my router).
Also, if I had been using my real email address in NG posts, I would change
it because the world would have already known my current email address.
When surfing the net, I NEVER reveal my email address unnecessarily. If I
have to "register" to receive some freebie, I use a fake address, and do not
include my telephone number or snail-mail address.
I use NONE of the add-ons offered by my ISP. I think they are ineffective,
or at least redundant after the other steps I have already taken.
By using these steps, I have received almost zero spam/viri mail during the
past several years, even though I am quite active in using my email program
and surfing the 'net - including banking and internet purchases.
Best of luck.
