First they are not coming from Yahoo they are coming from users of their
email system.

You cannot really do much more than you are doing, Does your email ISP
provide web mail access, if so you can delete then before downloading. Also,
there are various products around that can filter email before you download.

As far as stopping it goes - the simple answer is you can't you can only
"deal" with it when it arrives.

If things get bad, try discarding your email address and setting up another
(keeping it's name as restricted as possible).

Also some ISP now have filters that check with spamcop and delete then
automtically if the sender is listed. These work reasonably well - but as
always the spammers are usually one step ahead.

What really is required is a change in the law - but that seems ulikely at
the moment.

Set up the following:-
Good updated virus killer
A spam trap eg. (e-mail address removed)
Set up filters. (not fantastic on OE)
Install patch from Microsoft site.
Don't download message from server or open attachments.
Be very very patient.
Don't bother posting complaints in newsgroups as people are getting annoyed
with same question and hurl abuse at you. Read the posts first, and you will
see that the whole world are having same problem. if only this was all
spread about, then others will cut down on the spreading of it through their
address book contacts. Incidentally, one pattern of all this, is that if you
don't use newsgroups, you don't seem to be affected. Hope this helps a
little.

Hi Mangler:

You can do a lot to stop it yourself.

I operate a 4-computer LAN with a router connected to a cable modem. Three
of the PCs use Windows XP and the other one uses Windows 98 SE. Every one of
these PCs has a unique email address. Yet it is extremely rare that any of
these computers ever receive trash email - not in the past and certainly not
now during the "Swen" crisis.

I use the following steps to prevent this nuisance in each of my computers:

I keep all of my operating systems up-to-date by regularly using the Windows
Update function.

I do not, and never have, used my real email address in NG posts. All that
does is invite the entire world to fill my inbox with spam, and worse.

I created a message rule that deletes from the server any incoming email
that does NOT have my real email address in the TO or CC line.

I use currently updated anti-virus software (AVG, free), currently updated
anti-spyware/anti-adware software (AD-Aware, free), a popup stopper (from
Panicware, free), and fireware (my router).

Also, if I had been using my real email address in NG posts, I would change
it because the world would have already known my current email address.

When surfing the net, I NEVER reveal my email address unnecessarily. If I
have to "register" to receive some freebie, I use a fake address, and do not
include my telephone number or snail-mail address.

I use NONE of the add-ons offered by my ISP. I think they are ineffective,
or at least redundant after the other steps I have already taken.

By using these steps, I have received almost zero spam/viri mail during the
past several years, even though I am quite active in using my email program
and surfing the 'net - including banking and internet purchases.

Best of luck.

You are one of many people affected by the Swen virus.

These e-mails are all hoax's and are NOT from Microsoft. Visit MS and
download the appropriate patch to stop the e-mails.

The virus you have is called Worm\Swen.A

You can eliminate most of this by doing the following:

Select Tools>Message Rules>Mail>Mail Rules tab>New button>1: Select the
conditions for your rule: Check "Where the TO line contains people, 2:
Select the action for your rule: Check "Delete it from server", 3: Rule
description, Left click "contains people", enter your email addresses at the
blinking cursor, click on Add, click on the Options button, Select "Message
does not contain the people below", click OK, OK, OK, OK. You're done.

Since Mangler says that he/she "block every one that comes
through," it would appear that no virus at all has been
contracted.
