A friend of mine cannot open any .wmv file that arrives as an
attachment to an email message she receives. The following message
appears when she attempts to access the file:
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing
this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control
panel."

She's using Windows Media Player 10 and OE6 (XP Pro w/SP2). She has no
problem opening a .wmv file from *any* location on her computer
*other* than when it arrives as an OE attachment. So, of course, she
can download the .wmv file to her Desktop, for example, and access &
play the video in WMP that way. But not directly from OE. And she's
encountered no other problems with WMP save this one.

No problems accessing any other file attachment in OE. There's nothing
we could find in OE's Options that would seem to thwart opening the
..wmv file in WMP. The virus attachments and block images checkboxes
under the Security tab are both unchecked and there's nothing in her
Mail Rules that would seem to cause this situation.

Any help would be appreciated.

As an aside. And perhaps one may consider me old-fashioned. But, I
always download any
file attachment I'm expecting in an email to a folder, then scan it with
an anti-virus.

Then I manually open it with the app I need. Perhaps tho, my habit may
keep me somewhat a tad more secure in keeping my pc that I need day to
day for a living virus and malware free.

This is a known issue with Windows XP SP2. Use the Set Program Access and
defaults option in Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and set WMP as the
default (even though WMP is already the default player for .WMV files).

When you open a Command Prompt and type
echo temp=%temp%
then you can see the path to the %temp% folder.
Does this folder exist? Is it accessible? Can you
place a large file into it? Is there sufficient spare space?

This fixed the problem. Thanks very much ramesh.
