Emachine/XP Home Edition Problems

Tony

Hello-

I just recently bought a new emachine (their customer
support sucks) It came with XP Home edition installed.
Everything worked great until recently.

I had to use the restore cd's to restore the computer
back to the original settings because I got that balck
screen- Windows cannot startup because the following
files are missing or corrupt- it was a system32/config i
believe. I have never touched any of those files.

After I restored it, it worked ok for about a week- I
came home from work and that screen was waiting for me...

SO- I did the restore again- Now when i try to install
anything, the computer reboots, and reboots, until
finally I get the black screen. When I say install - i
mean AOL 9.0, MS office 2000, various poker websites.
So, now i have ordered the SP 2 from Microsoft, installed
it- still get the same reboot problme ( and i already
checked off automatic restart in the my computer
properties). This is aggrevating, and alll EMachines did
was email me a link to the microsoft site that I have
already been to. I went to Q307545, but it only explains
how to fix it if you have the Setup CD. Also, i assumed
when you do a system restore- that it should go back to
factory settings..

Anyone Help ?

Tony;
Go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer or Emachine website
and get the hard drive diagnostics.
If the computer is new, consider sending the computer back.

Ever think you may have a hardware problem? Unplug everything except the
mouse, keyboard and monitor. See what happens.

So i unplug everything except what you siad, an then try
to install things and see what happens?

As you can see, I really know only the basics of
computers.

I emailed Emachines again.

what do I do with them?
Tony, it sounds very much like you have a hardware problem. The machine
is still under warranty, right? Don't delay. Contact eMachines tech
support and send it back. This will not heal itself.

I think he keeps getting the blaster virus. I don't recall the
patch.

Here is what he needs to do. Get xp sp2 cd.

Disconnect or unplug your internet connection.
Use the restore cd.
Don't activate if asked.
Don't unplug anything from the computer.
If asked don't install printer drivers yet.
Install xp sp2
Install your printer & drivers.
Restore your internet connection
Now activate if asked.

John,
Read the post better. It seems like a hardware problem.
I know it caused by the blaster viruses. I had the same problem.
However, This was way before sp2 was released and before I knew how to
do a clean install of xp. I just downloaded the patch for the blaster
virus. Restored from the cd.
Turned on windows firewall.
Installed the patch
Installed virus program
Installed firewall

Tony,
One more thing don't install the s3 graphics from windows update. It
will also mess up your system-This will cause the same problem as the
blaster virus did.
