EMachine XP restore problems

K

Keith

Hopefully someone can help me.

I have an Emachine Model T2482 that I am working on for a client. They were
having major problems with it, possibly a virus. They said there was no
valuable data on there they were worried about saving, so I did a restore
from the system restore disks that came with the system. Ghost when through
its process and said it was done, but when the system restarted, it loaded
to the screen where you can choose safe mode, start windows normally, and
all the rest of them. I choose start windows normally, and it rebooted...i
choose safed mode, and it rebooted. It is in a constant reboot loop. Has
anyone ever experienced this problem before??? I had a personal copy of
Windows XP PRO, and was able to install that without a problem. The only
thing I am having problems with, are the emachines restore disks!

HELP PLEASE

I'm glad you're not trying to fix my computer. First you say "I did a
restore
from the system restore disks that came with the system." Then you say,
"Ghost when [sic] through its process and said it was done..." Which did
you use, Ghost or the restore disks?

Using a computer manufacturer's Restore CDs requires that the
entire computer be returned to the original hardware state. If the
client added or changed anything internally, it must be removed
and the original factory hardware components reinstalled. Also,
make sure there are no peripheral hardware devices attached,
except for the monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Well arn't you the funny one Raymond. If you knew ANYTHING about restoring
an emachine, you would know that they use ghost images of the original hard
drive to restore. Ghost is the program to restore the hard drive.
Therefore the words "restore" and "ghost" will be in the same sentence.

So Raymond, next time know what you are talking about before you jump
someones ship....k buddy...thanks

You may habe a problem with the boot sector. With you original XP Pro CD,
remove an re-create the partition. Format the drive in XP and then try to
Recovery CD.

There's a difference between "Ghost" with a capital "G" and "ghost." The
former would be a proper noun, and one would assume that you were
referring to the Symantec product. On the other hand, the "ghost" you
were referring to is a verb, not a noun. You can "ghost" an image. As
if that weren't enough, I'm not sure that e-Machines uses an image disk.
Some OEMs use a hidden partition that is accessed from the restore disk.
As I said originally, I'm glad you're not working on my computer.

Don't be too hard on him because I believe that Emachines uses Ghost to
create the restore image and that's what he may have been referring to.

Nope. Care to try again?

I've never seen an E-Machine ship with an actual OEM XP Pro CD. They
ship with a restore CD; sometimes these restore CDs are used to access
a hidden partition on the hard drive for restore purposes.

They certainly don't ship with both a WinXP CD AND a recovery CD.
There is no need for both.

Absolutely right, eMachines has one of the most restrictive restore policies
of any manufacturer. Any change in the system hardware will break the
restore process. You can only restore an eMachine with the supplied eMachine
disks on the original configuration. I suspect this to keep support costs
down and allows them to offer their systems at such low prices.
I have found most eMachine systems to be solid performers; especially for
the price. I wouldn't purchase one, but for many users they are perfect for
their computing needs. When they want to upgrade, the buy a new system.

You're right. I wasn't aware that eMachines was using the Symantec Ghost
process. Mea culpa.
