If you're running Windows XP, locate the program eudcedit.exe. This program
will let you create font characters (using an actual font character as a
starting point if that's your choice) and then attach your custom character
to a font set that you already have. Typically, you would use this extra
character much like the way you insert a symbol. For routine use you might
be able to use autocorrect or more likely Find/Replace. This works well if
you want it for printed output but your character will not show up on other
systems if you use it in email or some document attached to email since the
character only exists in your fonts.
