ECS L7VMM3 MOBO Problem

I am my wit's end. My neighbor has an older AMD machine, containing a
ECS L7VMM3 motherboard (2000+ CPU), that bombed.

I decided to reinstall her Windows XP PRO fresh, and it went fine.
However, I now discover she no longer has a supporting CD disk (if one
ever existed) that I would suppose contains the usual drivers among
other things. I need the CD (I think) because I cannot get any sound.
When I test audio in ControlPanel>Sounds, I get an error window saying
Windows cannot play the sound, the sound card may be in use. Deice
Manager shows several entries under Sound Controllers, including
"audio codecs', 'legacy audio drivers', 'media control devices',
'legacy video capture devices', 'uni-modem audio device', and 'video
codecs'. I have tried to remove these, but XP will not let me.

So I think I need audio drivers. The audio is on-board AC'97

I have looked for two days on the web for a MOBO manual and/or a CD -
to no avail.

www.usereasy.com/product_6919.html shows this MOBO as unavailable and
having VIA VT1612A CODEC and AC'97 v2,2 for audio.

I have searched driverguide.com for drivers - the two I found that
matched a little bit do not work. I guess if I knew for sure what I
needed, maybe I could find it.

Can anyone help me?

I googled for ecs (wasnt that hard) and came up with their international
site - then went to downloads and looked through the socket 462 (same as
socket a)
listings for l7vmm3 - it only showed L7VMM2 but the sound driver is the
standard ac97 so that should work and the mobo drivers are the standard VIA
4-in-1s.

In general, that's always the best way to do drivers, don't
seek old mobo manufacturers' drivers but rather get the
newer ones direct from the chipset manufacturers.

Okay - But as I said my Device Manager says

Do you have any idea how I can 'remove' or 'un-install' these? I

I finally was able to un-install all the audo-related stuff under
sound controller in Device Manager by booting in safe mode.

Still did no good - even after I installed the first of the drivers I
found at your suggested sites.

Thing is - When I go to ControlPanel>Sounds>Sound tab, and I test
sound by clicking, say, on 'asterisk', I still get the error window
saying:
WINDOWS CANNOT PALY THE SOUND %SYSTEMROOT%\MEDIA\WINDOWS XP ERROR.WAV
YOUR SOUND CARD MAY BE IN USE.

So, I am still stuck. Any advice?

Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Drivers, Legacy Video Capture Devices, Media
Control Devices and Video Codecs are all standard software based sound/video
devices for a Windows XP installation and are not motherboard specific,
therefore do not require any drivers other than what is included with XP.
AFAIK, these devices will always be present, even if there is no Sound Card
or Video Capture Card in the PC.

The Uni-Modem Audio Device is part of the Dial-up modem either installed
inside or connected to the PC. Removing the Modem will allow the removal of
this device.

AFAIK, you will need to install the VIA 4-in-1 pack before you will be able
to install the VIA AC-97 Sound Driver.

I managed to find the driver downloads pages for three different revisions
of the L7VMM3 on the ECS website, once I changed the language to English-UK.
They were found under the Socket A section in downloads/motherboards. You
may have to reassemble the links if they get word wrapped....

I re-installed XP and sound works okay.

1) Do not delete them from Device Manager. There should've
been a driver in Add/remove programs. Otherwise, after
they're detected by XP, don't touch them, just install the
Via driver.

2) Try playing some other sound file... just in case that
one is damaged.

3) Go into Control Panel Multimedia and see what it lists
there.

Thanks - I'll take a look. As I said, I finally was able to remove
the sound-related entries in Device Manager, including the modem.
Then I reinstalled XP which probably was not necessary. Anyway,
things are cop acetic now,
