E-mails download fine then disappear

I run my Gmail account thru Windows Mail. It's been working just fine for
weeks, then suddenly I noticed a large number of e-mails that had been in my
Inbox are no longer there and I didn't accidentally delete them. Fortunately
they still appear in my Inbox on the Gmail website. They downloaded into
Windows Mail initially but then seemed to have disappeared on their own.

Any idea what happened or more importantly how to prevent this from
happening in the future?

Thank you.

Make sure your 'current view' for that folder is "Show All Messages"
instead of "Hide Read Messages".

Yes, "show all messages" is selected. The only thing I can think of is one
time when I was closing the program and shutting down that message popped up
offering to collapse (not sure if that was the word?) folders in order to
make more room. Something like that anyway. So I said "okay". Would that
have anything to do with this problem?

1. Don't store large numbers of emails in your inbox. Create folders for
them, and put them there.

2. Check at the top right blue bar on the Windows Mail screen, and make
sure is set to "Show All Messages"

3.. You should generally set your Windows Mail program to delete downloaded
messages from the server, or you can be expecting that when you reach
Gmails' limit, you will no longer receive email.

Good luck.

That message that pops up offers to compact the message store.
It should have no effect on your issue of missing emails.

Make sure you have looked in all the folders for the missing emails.
Sometimes they get put in a folder called Recovered Messages.

If no joy, try upgrading to Windows Live Mail. Sometimes it recovers
messages that appear to be missing from Windows Mail.
