e-mail issues

I just bought a new computer and am running Vista for the first time. I have
2 issues. First, I receive email OK but when I go out to get mail IE
SEND/RECEiVE I get an error if no new mail exists on the server. My second
issue is that from my MSN home page when I hit the upper right icon for
email, it brings up microsoft outlook instead of microsoft mail. When
Outlook comes up, it is hidden under the MSN home page. Anybody out there
have any ideas?

1) Please copy and paste the unedited error message to your reply here.

2) go to default programs, either from the start menu or in Control
Panel>set your default programs>wait for the list of programs to
populate>select Windows Mail and ensure that it is set as default.

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'mail.optonline.net', Server: 'mail.optonline.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

Thanks for your response. I fixed the icon MSN problem however email still
hides under MSN>.
The error message makes no sense to me. My wifes Vista laptop is on a
wifi and does not have the same issue

1. "Unexpected" termination is usually caused by interference from
an antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus should be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

Email scanning in any antivirus should be disabled, for reasons
explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

If no improvement after disabling email scanning, consider upgrading
to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering bad effects
from overly intrusive antivirus programs:
http://download.live.com/wlmail

2. Try this variation of the Default Programs procedure:
The following procedure will rewrite the default protocol
assignments in the registry:
Open the Default Programs applet, then click on "Set program
access and computer defaults." Expand the Custom selection, and
select Windows Mail. Click OK.
