Is there anything worth salvaging from a T1840 e-machine with a cooked
motherboard? 3 years old and was a descent computer until it died. Thanks in
advance

Well it depends on what is wrong with it. If Motherboard is gone then
probably you have to pay somebody to take it away otherwise it can be
repaired by replacing the parts.

I don't normally throw anything away. I have all my PCs since 1985!!!

Are you in the UK? I can take it away for nothing!!!

A quick search for some specs finds it is/was a 1.8 Ghz Celeron 128 Megs of
DDR memory, a 40 gig HD, but with a built-in video card.

I'm pretty sure you could pick up a comparable MB for $50 or less, as long
as the CPU and memory are good, although not enough memory really for XP.

Maybe something like this...

http://3btech.net/msi6740pe4mi.html

This one is $30 but doesn't have built in graphics.

Seems like you have to pay $3 more for one with the built-in graphics...

http://3btech.net/msi67i8ch40m1.html $33

If it was mine AND I had a use for it, I'd spend the $33. OK, maybe if I
didn't have a use for it I would still do it.

If you know for certain it is just the motherboard why not replace the
motherboard? You can likely pick one up for cheap off an online discount
store.

Then again use the case/drives/power supply for this MB/CPU/512DDR combo,
for $119!!!! after rebate.

You either forgot, or you don't know, that the Windows XP supplied by
e-Machines is BIOS locked. If the OP doesn't obtain a motherboard with an
identical BIOS as the original (e.g. purchase direct from e-Machines), then
his current copy of Windows XP will not install. It is highly unlikely that
e-Machines will have a three-year old motherboard lying around.

Add to your projected costs the cost of a new copy of Windows XP.

Since the OP is asking if there is anything salvageable, it is apparent that
the OP lacks the skills to rebuild a PC, so:
Add the cost of having a technician do the work.

Given those costs, it is less expensive to replace a three-year-old low-end
PC with a new low-end PC.

Or buy an XP2CD retail for $89 and hope you can find the drivers for
your propriatary system cards.

Just curious. What proprietary cards might you be speaking of?

There are no proprietary cards in that machine, no cards at all, except for
a super cheap win modem. MB with on-board video, sound, and network, with
an Intel845GL chipset. The only thing that may be slightly proprietary
would be a half-height power supply, if that.

It's NOT a late '80's Compaq, just a cheap PC.

Thanks for making my point. And fwiw, on a couple older emachines I
recently worked on that needed power supplies, the supplies were easily
replaced with ones purchased off-the-shelf from the local Best Buy. And
having owned and upgraded more than a couple of them, I find them a good
value for the money spent. YMMV.

I did this for a emachine once. Bought a cheap motherboard and then a new
copy of Windows XP, the emachine windows program is locked to BIOS and does
not work on any other replacement motherboard. The new motherboard and new
XP disk was cheaper than the replacement motherboard from emachine.
However if you are not a techy person, it will be cheaper to buy a new
machine than to pay someone to fix yours. By the By, don't even look at
another emachine. They are a pile of junk, or "you get what you pay for".
