No Sound With a New Motherboard & XP Transplant.

I replaced the shorted Imperial IM845GL motherboard in an Emachines T1840
desktop (purchased in 2003) with an Intel D865GVHZL motherboard. I
transplanted the 40GB hard drive and the computer booted. I loaded all the
drivers that came on the CD with the new motherboard. The computer seems to
be working great except no sound. To be certain I covered everything I
installed the latest audio dirver and BIOS update from the Intel website. I
verified that the audio is enabled in BIOS and everywhere else I could find
to check. I deleted & reinstalled the audio hardware in Device Manager. Still
no sound.

Intel agreed to replace the motherboard but warned me that transplanting the
original XP installation may be the cause of my sound problem; something
about some bus driver that doesn't get replaced until you re-install XP.

The only software reinstallation CDs I have are the Emachines restore CDs
which I understand won't work with any motherboard different from the
original, so if I would reformat the HDD I would lose all the other software
like Works, Power DVD, etc. Also, I don't have a real XP home edition disk.
(I do have a Dell SP2 disk, but I don't know if that would work.) I do have a
XP Home Edition license on the computer case.

Do you experts agree that my no-sound problem could be caused by reusing the
original XP installation? If this is a possibility is there other "hardware"
I could delete and reinstall in Device Manager that could fix the problem. Do
you think reinstalling XP over itself (repair) would fix it (if I can find a
real Home Edition disk)?

Yes it's quite possible, since you didn't do a repair install after moving
the drive. The normal way to remedy this is by a repair install.
