Dynamic Web Template question

Reesa Marchetti

Hi,

Hi,

I'm still getting used to using Dynamic Web Templates. It seems like a
great way to go, but I have questions. Is there a good tutorial on
them? I had the following link but it seems to be dead:
http://www.sharepointcustomization.com/wss/articles/dwt.htm

Anyway, my general question is, I would like other people to be able
to edit content in the middle, or body, of every page of a new site
I'm setting up. But I would like the heading/top banner, left
navigation bar and footer NOT to be editable -- except by me. I have
created a .dwt file with all of these areas marked as editable dwt
regions. This is so if I want to change the design in the future, I
can just change the .dwt file.

I am afraid that if I don't mark the top, side and footer as editable
regions that I won't be able to change them in the future. But at the
same time, I don't want the outside people who are editing the body
content to be able to change any other region. Am I going about this
wrong?

I appreciate any help or guidance you can give me.

Note: These users must also be using FP2003 and DWT is not support when
users are work against the FP extensions.

When you open the DWT, the entire template is always
editable: editable and non-editable regions alike. So,
strange as it may seem, there's no problem editing an non-
editable region.

In a page that attaches a DWT, however, only the editable
regions are editable.

Keep in mind, though, that FP2002 and earlier versions
have no knowledge of DWTs. The non-editable regions will
only be locked if the outside people use FP2003.

Hi Thomas,

I don't understand what you mean by "working against FP extensions." I
intend to set up this site so that clients, who also will be using FP
2003, can update content on pages that have the DWT attached, without
fear of altering the design.

So should I limit the editable region to the body? And if so, it seems
to me if I want to change the overall design in the future, I would
either change the dwt the files are attached to, or create a new dwt
and attach them to the new one.

Am I getting closer?

Thanks!

Unless the site is hosted on a Windows 2003 server with WSS, any changes you
make to the DWT directly on the remote server will not be automatically
updated on pages using the DWT. The auto-updating of the DWT on all pages
only works locally on a Disk-based web or remotely on a WSS web.

I am not sure it this issue will have any impact on your client updating
content via editable regions via FP2003 on a Windows 2000 server with the
FP2002 extensions.

It should not. This issue only concerns changes made to the DWT propagating
to the attached pages, not the other way around.

Thanks for all your help, Thomas.

But just one more, stupid question: What is WSS?

WSS = Windows SharePoint Service (Available only on Windows 2003 Servers)
