Dynamic Web Templates

Dennis

Hi, I thought it was time I tried to start working with Dynamic Web
Templates instead of includes and shared borders.

I create the DWT, and editable regions, then create new pages from DWT. All
that is fine but I can seem to do a global update of all pages when I change
the DWT and it doesn't even prompt me to update attached pages when I save
the edited DWT. All options under the Dynamic Web Template menu are grayed
out accept for 'manage editable regions' when I have the DWT open and when I
have an attached page open the only relevant menu option available is
'Update Selected Page'. With no pages open I still can't select 'Update all
pages'.

Do I have a setting wrong or something? I must be able to update all
attached pages without having to open each one individually to update it.

Can anyone help?

Howdy.

Am I correct in thinking you're editing a Web site that
resides on a server with the FrontPage Server Extensions
installed?

If so, the global update feature won't work. DWTs are a
FP2003 feature, and the most recent version of the server
extensions are FP2002.

PS
To get around the problem w/ DWT updates in FP SE webs
Publish your online site to a disc based web (say C:\MyWebName)
In Remote Site View select Open Remote Site in FP (the new DBWS C:\MyWebName)
In the new DBW instance of FP update your DWT
Then close the site and back in the online site reverse publish - Remote (C:\MyWebName) to Local (your online site) using the
Changes only option

Oh, IC, then from what you and Jim are saying, I can't manage DWT well with
2002 extensions?

And if I create or publish to a disk based site then I can use the update
all feature?

Thanks I will try this but I must tell you that it feels really
uncomfortable working with a disk based site after using FP and localhost
for 5 years. It doesn't feel natural :)

I suppose if I had ShrePoint installed on my server then I could do a lot
more with DWT. I wish MS had of released 2003 server extensions instead of
or as well as SharePoint. It's had to get a good priced reseller web host
that provides SharePoint.

Thanks guys

Don't consider it working in a DBW - just a detour to get the DWT to update
After your DWT update (and reverse publish) go back to working in the server based web

WSS (although is supports the automatic update) is not the solution, since it loses all the other FP run time component
