DVDs work, but CDs don't

Hi,

My DVD player model name and # is hl-dt-st rw/dvd gcc-4243N
My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A65 series. The CDs always used to
work, then one day I inserted one in and it didn't work. I thought it
was corrupted or scratched or something, so didn't think much of it.
It's been a while since I played another, and when I tried to open
another CD last night with some important files in it, it didn't work
-- but it worked on another computer. I checked my DVDs, and they're
working.
I went on Toshiba's technical support site to see if they had firmware
updates or anything of the sort, and they didn't for this model. And I
even went to the properties and did update driver, but it didn't find
any.

Any help would be appreciated!

You can try cleaning it. If that doesn't work than the laser probably is bad
and it's cheaper to buy a whole new drive than it is to repair it.

A further note: reading a CD uses a different laser wavelength than a
DVD, which is why one could still work while the other doesn't - it could
be a problem with one of the lasers themselves.

Hope you get it working by cleaning. Probably would be
cheaper to buy a whole new laptop than to purchase a
replacement Laptop DVD drive (LMAO). At least it isn't a
Compaq which would cost more. National Parts Depot is the
only supplier for Toshiba repair parts. See here:

$184.44 + S & H, tax.

I'll clean it tonight and try it. I hope it'll work.

So there's no chance it's a driver problem, huh?
