I have a DELL Latitude with a
HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4243N

burner. Somewhere I read that you have to buy certain DVDs for burning based on what unit you have! Is this true and if so, which do I buy?

Thanks, a newbie

Incorrect :)

Although certain DVD rewriters can have compatability problems with certain dyes used on on them but that is just amanufacturing spec. Stick with a good quality brand Like Verbatim, Datasafe, Taiyo Yuden, Sony, Philips and you will be fine.
The general Rule is the darker the Dye on the disk the better. Its trial and error though a lot of the time and it all depends on the Writer you buy aswell. So get a good one!

Also compatability issues can also be corrected by firmware flash but you have to be very careful doing this as you can Brick your writer.
