dvdrw speed issues

i have windows xp pro sp1 all updates, sony DRU- something, it's the 4x one,
510.
why won't it burn at 4x on 4x dvd's? i have firmware from a couple months
ago and dvd decryptor and dvdxcopy seem to only burn 2x even when dvd
decryptor says the media is 4x.
I've tried Ritek 4x dvd-r and also princo 4x dvd-r.

Hi,

Generally, a burn rate is most limited by the source (extraction rate) of
the data being written. Look not to the media and the write speed, but to
the source of data.

Regardless of the amount of ram, cpu speed, or bus speed, the write-rate is
going to be limited by the source of the data. Test the extraction rate of
where you are pulling the data from (other disk, hard drive, etc), most
programs provide for this function, and I'm betting you will find that it is
not that fast. Just because a drive plays at 52X does not mean it can
extract data at that rate.

The sony DVDrw drive, well ok, what you are saying is of no relevence here
and makes no sense at all. are you talking about my dvdrw drive being slow?
or my hard drive being slow? you don't say. but it's ok because it doesn't
mater being my pc is a speed demon in all respect. dvdrw drive is, the hard
drive is a 10k rpm hard drive etc etc.

it might be that my ide channel was pio mode not UDMA or DMA. not sure what
channel my dvd is on, but i changed it all to
DMA and when i get more movies in a couple days to back up, I will test it.

There are several issues.
Is the CD/DVD drive on a seperate buss from the System HD doing the data
buffering?
Have you tried copying to the HD and then burning the CD/DVD?
I assume that the CDRW/DVD drive has some sort of overrun protection scheme.
