i have windows xp pro sp1 all updates, sony DRU- something, it's the 4x one,
510.
why won't it burn at 4x on 4x dvd's? i have firmware from a couple months
ago and dvd decryptor and dvdxcopy seem to only burn 2x even when dvd
decryptor says the media is 4x.
I've tried Ritek 4x dvd-r and also princo 4x dvd-r.

Why are you so sure the problem is within the OS? Good luck. Your chance of finding the solution here is slim.

You would have a better opportunity of solving this issue with people that have dealt with it.

no this is not the wrong group, this group is about issues inside windows
xp.

This kind of unfriendly response doesn't exactly make one want to drop
everything and help you.

What makes you think your problem IS an issue evolving from Windows?

The issue you describe is one often mentioned in other newsgroups that
more specifically deal with DVD problems and issues. Have you bothered
to check any of them?

Initially, I would have said your problem WAS a firmware problem but
you claim it's been updated. (Quite honestly, since your best
description of the firmware update was " i have firmware from a couple
months ago", and since you don't seem to know the actual DVD burner
you have, I'm not left with a confident feeling the firmware has been
updated.)

Nonetheless, the issue you have could be due to the DVD media you're
using. +R DVD media seem to burn on the Sony DRU-510A burner at 4X
while -R media may not. There's also a potential issue with the actual
brand of DVDs you're trying to use.

There are many other newsgroups in which this question would be better
placed. Posting your question in these groups gets YOU a faster and
more accurate response. That is what you want, isn't it?

There is also a site erected by Sony for YOUR burner. You might spend
some time there.

Another source of excellent information - and TOO much information --
would be http://www.dvdrhelp.com/
