ok probably a silly question but can you take a DVD and save it to a windows
video format to your hard drive? if so how?

It depends...if a DVD is "write protected" then you will not, likely, be
able to copy it to your hard drive, then copy it to a blank DVD. There are
countless programs through a google search using keywords: DVD, burn dvd,
copy dvd, etc... you may come up with one that will copy your particular
DVD. Some have said if you use fingernail polish remover on the barely
distiguishable outer edge of the DVD write protection section you can then
copy it. I never tried this and probably never will.

If i'm on the wrong track here windows xp has software to recognise a DVD
in several formats. If your DVD is not being seen try updating the related
windows software, wmp, codecs activex etc.. There are also programs that can
tell you what codecs you are missing or what a DVD requires. In which case
you can start here: http://www.divxcodecs.com/

Or, search using key words "missing codecs program" on Google. If you use
any other search program I can't be held responsible for your personal
information being turned over to our government, which is currently the Bush
administration.
