DVD R/+RW

Does Win XP Home support writing to a DVD? We have a new
Dell with a NEC 1100A DVD R/+RW CD R/+RW combi drive. It
will play DVD's with no problem. It will write a CD.
But we are unable to burn data, music or video to the
DVD. In trying to resolve this we've received messages
such as "improper media" "no supported DVD recorder
detected" to name a few. Hours on the phone with Dell
and replacment of the drive two times. Our last attempt
to fix was running Windows XP install and using the
repair option. Apx 3/4 way through the device
installation the follow message was received "DEVICE
INSTALLATION ERROR Windows could not load the installer
for TapeController, contact your hardware vendor".

Perhaps the TapeController is used to interface with DVD
writers? It's obvious that Dell did not test this
machine prior to shipping.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Greetings

Windows XP does not include DVD burning. You will need third party
applications in order to do it.

You mean natively? No. Most such drives come with appropriate software, in
any event it requires third party software.

Hi!
You need a third party application as Win XP doesn't come with it by
default.

We have tried third party software as well. Three to be
exact. Still cannot burn DVD. Ideas?

Then the problem is with the third party software because XP does not
natively support writing to a DVD drive and no tweaking, fixing, repair
install, addition of SP1 or any other update to XP up to this time can
change that. This function requires third party software and if this drive
was supplied by Dell, it's their responsibility. If the drive was supplied
by someone else, in other words was added after purchase, then it is the
responsibility of the drive manufacturer.

The error you are receiving with regard to the tape controller is indicative
of a problem with the software from which that device is being installed.

That said, there is a possibility that other software installed on your
system may be conflicting with the third party software you are trying to
install for the burner but the only way to diagnose that would be to remove
any other applications, one by one until you were able to install the DVD
burner software.
