DVD-r/rw CD-r/rw Combo Not Burning

Hi, Long Story that needs a solution. I'm a novice here. I had installed
SP2 for XP not knowing in the long run it would affect my system. I then got
my hands on Easy CD Creater v4.02a and loaded it. I got an error message
that said my drives were disabled because of that installation. So I removed
Easy CD Creater v4.02a. The message remained though. I had previously
installed and used successfully Pinnacle Studio 8. I recently had obtained
Studio 9. And proceeded to install it. Or at least tried. During
installation, it was automatically uninstalling Studio 8 and I had to restart
the computer. After restarting the computer, both my dvd-r/rw cd-r/rw combo
drive and my cd drive were missing. I restored my system and redid the same
thing at least three more times - installing, uninstalling, and restoring. I
then was told that SP2 for XP could also be a driving factor in this problem.
I uninstalled it. Still having that pop up message that I ignored - not
realizing that it would have an affect in the long run. I came across
information under articles 320553 - CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive appears to
be missing... I followed the instructions and wella! the drives were back.
They were playing music fine. I went to burn a cd and found that the
capability was gone - aha the pop window was still there. Removing Easy CD
Creater v4.02a did not bring back the writing capability. I usually just
drag and drop and burn through XP. I can't now. I then came across article
315345 CD Recording Software Will Cause Windows to Become Unstable. I
followed the instructions, but it hasn't changed anything - oh wait, it did
remove the pop up message. But I still can't drag, drop, and burn using XP
or Windows Media. What can I do now? Help. Angela

Hi, There is no recording tab. All I see are: General, AutoPlay, Hardware,
Sharing. And I looked under each. Angela

The earliest EasyCD that will work with XP is 4.05. Removing it leaves
loose ends in the registry. You can usually get version 4.05 to work if
you download the update from www.roxio.com. (or else get a later
version). If you want to try 4.05 proceed as follows:

Uninstall the version you have, then To tidy up, get a registry patch
file, cdgone.reg, from www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract it,
r-click on it and merge it into the registry

Reboot; install your 4.02. Do *not* install Direct CD or TakeTwo,
which will not work properly at all in XP. At the end on exit do *not*
reboot but run the upgrade and then reboot.

But with version 7 having just come out you might be better to look for
a ver 6 on clearout

Hi, Thanks for that info. I had to change the number from "3" to "2". The
Recording Tab shows up and I select the box to enable recording and apply it.
It just doesn't stay applied. I had to go to work, so I didn't get to
dabble a bit more. When I go home, I will check into again. I'm getting
closer with your help. Thanks again. Angela

I got it to stay. I had purchased an external burner and I can't have both
of them selected as the burner. Why? I suppose that's a whole other issue
to research.

Anyway, I have the latest version of Windows Media Player and SonicBlast,
but neither (since they were disabled) are recognizing the cd burner. Last
night I clicked for updates for Media Player - but was told I have the latest
version - so nothing changed. Do you know or have a link I can check to get
this working again?

Thanks again for all your help. I know if I would have brought it to the
Geek Squad they would have reformatted if they couldn't figure the problem
out. I know someone that works under at that store was told that's what they
do. Yikes, I would have lost everything.

Angela,

Because Windows XP says, "You can only enable CD recording for one device at
a time." As far as why, I don't know.

Have you read Alex's post in this thread?

Here's an article by Alex...
