dvd problems

We have 2 pc's with a 12x DVD writer & a 16x DVD writer. The problem is the
12x runs so much faster & the reason is the 16x uses ~100% of the cpu while
the 12x uses ~5%.

Here is the info on the 16x: 2 gig Celeron, 240mb ram, 40g harddrive, 16x
says it will use dma if available.

12x: 1400+ amd, 360mb ram, 40g harddrive, 12x says it will use dma if
available.

Anyone got any ideas? TIA

Are the two DVDs made by the same company?

Have you tested the drives with the same software?

Have you looked for any possible drive firmware updates? Each drive may have
their own firmware updates.

Look in device manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, properties, in the
advanced settings tab for the IDE channel where your DVD drives are, ie.
Primary or Secondary.. See if both drives (current transfer mode) are using
UDMA mode 2 or if one drive has slipped into PIO mode..?
You may need to reset the drive to DMA mode and reboot..
Also, you could try uninstalling the offending drive in device manager,
rebooting to let Windows find and reinstall the drive..
